Travel from London to Sydney on the Kangaroo Route!





Before the age of jumbo jets flying non-stop across the globe, to get to Australia from Europe involved making a number of stopovers through Europe and Asia before finally arriving in Australia. Some possible stopovers included Paris, Istanbul, Bombay, Chennai, Singapore, Darwin before reaching Sydney.

Due to the number of stopvers or hops involved, the trip became known as the 'Kangaroo Route'. Today, stopovers are still common in Asia in either Singapore or Bangkok, but the stays are usually limited to sitting in the transit lounge for a couple of hours.

Recently, a number of discount regional airlines have opened shop offering heavily discounted fares without all of the extras like movies and a food service. It is now possilbe to make your own Kangaroo route journey from Europe to Australia.

You may not save much money, but if you have the time it can be a great way to see a number of different cities as you make your way across the globe. Of course, you will need to at least add another week or two to your trip.

Easyjet has cheap flights from London and various Europen cities including Paris from as little as 28 pounds, one way.

Western to Easten Europe

Onur Air and Czech Airlines have cheap flights from European cities like Paris to Istanbul, Turkey.

Eastern Europe to the Middle East

From Eastern Europe the next possible stop is the Middle East. Dubai and Sharjah are rapidly becoming transport hubs for the region. Air Arabia have discount flights.

Middle East to East Asia

From the Middle East you can board another flight to Chennai India, again on Air Arabia.

East Asia to South East Asia

From East Asia to the Asian transport hubs of Singapore or Hong Kong several discount airlines service the region, including Asia Airlines or Air India Express.

South East Asia to Australia

From South East Asia to Australia's most northern major city, Darwin, Tiger Airways does a good job of covering the route.

From Darwin to other cities in Australia a number of discount airlines have commenced business including Jetstar and Virgin Blue, where you will be looking forward to a hot shower and comfortable bed!
